OJ Simpson asked men accompanying him to a showdown with two sports memorabilia dealers to carry guns, a former co-defendant in his armed robbery case testified overnight.

Walter Alexander, 46, said disgraced former American football star Simpson had urged him and another man Michael McClinton, to bring firearms to the planned confrontation in a Las Vegas hotel room on September 13.

Faces life sentence

Simpson - famously accused and later acquitted of murdering his ex-wife and her friend in Los Angeles in 1994 - could be jailed for life if eventually convicted of robbery and kidnapping charges.

The 60-year-old has been charged with a string of felony offences in connection with the incident in Las Vegas, when he and a gang of men allegedly swiped memorabilia worth $US100,000 ($114,000) from two dealers.

Simpson, who claims he was only recovering property that had been stolen from him, denied that weapons had been involved following his arrest and said he had not been aware that any of his associates were carrying guns.
